We erase the context that led to the scratch\u2019s formation\u2014a context that is an integral part of this piece of furniture\u2019s history of aging. This realization gives rise to a host of questions and issues that call for a binding code of professional ethics for conservators\u2014that is, guidelines for the ethically responsible handling of cultural heritage.  <\/p>\n<p>Such ethical guidelines play a crucial role in the protection of cultural heritage and, therefore, in historic preservation and restoration. Without a binding code of professional ethics, the practice of our profession would be unthinkable, and the objectives and results of restorers\u2019 work would be completely incomparable worldwide. The values and procedures for the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage sites set forth in the Venice Charter guide our restoration ethics as the Central Restoration Workshop Berlin and, of course, those of the entire VDR (Association of Restorers e.V.), <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zrw-berlin.de\/ueber\/mitgliedschaften\/\">of which<\/a> our owner, Philipp Westebbe, a university-certified restorer and carpenter. <\/p>\n<p>The objectives of conservation are clearly articulated in the Venice Charter: they are \u201cthe preservation of a work of art and the safeguarding of historical evidence.\u201d Restoration, on the other hand, is defined as a \u201cmeasure that should remain exceptional. Its goal is to preserve and reveal the aesthetic and historical values of the monument.
