Why should I carry out an assessment?

Assessing an object is essential before planning and carrying out any restoration project and is the absolute basis for developing a sound concept. An assessment, also known as a material assessment, is essential for the restoration examination in determining whether conservation or restoration treatment is necessary.

What criteria does the restorative appraisal record?

An assessment or review includes the viewing, recording, and inventory taking of all objects in private or museum collections. It often finds information on the following aspects:

  • used materials
  • descriptions of the material condition
  • information on characteristic features
  • details of the method of manufacture and the techniques used to make the object
  • identification of revisions of the object
  • evaluation of the conservation value in terms of monument preservation

When our wood and furniture restorers of the Zentrale Restaurierungswerkstatt Berlin assess your object, this is already the first step of a comprehensive restoration examination. Nevertheless, the information provided before an official assessment frequently remains limited to assumptions in need of verification. As a result, a comprehensive analysis of the findings and determination of the material is necessary. In addition to recording the current inventory, such an analysis may include

  • the identification of the type and extent of damage (damage analysis),
  • the assessment of the causes of damage and
  • the estimation of the type and extent of the necessary conservation or restoration treatment.

We use various methods of technical, microscopic, and spectroscopic research to find the needed answers. In practice, the boundaries between the individual steps remain fluid.
