The activity of the restorer consists of the material preservation of cultural and art objects in public, ecclesiastical and private ownership. In detail, this includes the examination, recording, documentation, concept development and implementation of measures in all areas of conservation and restoration. As well as advising the owners, art-technological and scientific research, and in exceptional cases the scientifically based reconstruction of cultural and art objects. The aim of this service is to preserve the historical, aesthetic and material integrity of an art object for future generations.
The task of restoration is divided into preventive and practical conservation.
Preventive conservation:
Preventive restoration refers to the transport, storage and also the exhibition of an object under optimal conditions.
Practical restoration:
Practical restoration involves the maintenance or complete or partial reconstruction of an art object in order to protect it from further deterioration.
The restorer's field of activity initially includes the creation of a tailor-made restoration concept on which the subsequent conservation and restoration work is based. The particular challenges of restoration lie in the use of suitable materials and methodologies in order to be able to carry them out in the restoration project. Since restoration often involves the conservation or reconstruction of historical substance, sufficient importance is attached in particular to the use of original materials and their processing. Predominantly used materials are wood, colouring substances from a wide variety of oils (e.g. linseed oil), resins and waxes. The analysis of the original manufacture of the object is almost inevitable in the context of a restoration.
Consequently, the high-quality restoration of an art object requires the contractor to have extensive knowledge of historical and modern processing methods. A clear and detailed description of the restoration to be carried out on the object makes it easier for the client and contractor to work together, as this allows the restorer to clearly identify his or her suitability for the service to be carried out.
