Why should I conduct an inventory?
Conducting a restoration or historic preservation survey is essential prior to planning and carrying out any restoration project, and serves as the absolute foundation for developing a well-founded restoration plan. A condition survey, also known as a physical condition survey, refers to a part of the restoration assessment in which it is determined whether conservation or restoration treatment is necessary.
What criteria are included in the restoration inventory?
An inventory or stock take involves reviewing, recording, and cataloging all objects to be restored in private collections or museum holdings. For each individual object, it includes information on the following aspects:
- Materials the object is made of
- Descriptions of the material condition
- Information on Distinctive Features
- Information on the manufacturing process and techniques used
- Identification of Revisions to the Object
- Assessment of Preservation Value in the Context of Historic Preservation
Restoration Assessment, Analysis of Findings, and Material Identification
So when our wood and furniture conservators from the Central Restoration Workshop in Berlin conduct an on-site assessment at your location, this is already the first step in a comprehensive conservation evaluation. Nevertheless, the information gathered during an on-site assessment is often based only on assumptions that have not yet been definitively verified. This requires a comprehensive diagnostic examination and material analysis is necessary. In addition to documenting the current condition, such an examination includes
- the identification of the type and extent of damage (damage analysis),
- the assessment of the causes of damage and
- an assessment of the nature and scope of the necessary conservation or restoration work.
To make reliable assessments based on these criteria, we employ various methods of technical, microscopic, and spectroscopic analysis. In practice, the boundaries between the terms “condition survey,” “documentation of findings,” “preliminary conservation assessment,” and “conservation examination” are fluid, since probing, recording findings, or inventorying often already include components of a conservation examination.
