  • Do you own a valuable piece of furniture, a permanently installed wooden object that is part of a historic preservation project, or another cultural asset in Berlin that requires professional restoration?
  • Would you like to have a wood floor restored?
  • Perhaps your property is damaged, has water damage, or the surface could use a little touch-up?
  • But at the same time, do you have a busy schedule, or is the item difficult to transport?

For cases like these, we at the Central Restoration Workshop in Berlin offer our special “in-situ service”—professional restoration on-site.

On-site restorations

It is often possible—and even advantageous—to carry out the desired restoration and repair work directly at your location in Berlin or at the site of the object. This convenient on-site restoration service offers the key advantage that you don’t have to worry about the time-consuming and risky transportation process, and at the same time, you don’t have to part with your beloved piece of furniture or the object you wish to preserve. The need for on-site restoration often arises due to an object’s size, fragility, or permanent installation—for example, in the case of historic furniture, wood paneling, or other elements related to historic preservation. Our experienced restorers come directly to you and carry out the necessary work with the utmost care.

The necessary conservation and restoration services depend on both the extent and the complexity of the damage. On-site restoration is particularly suitable for minor damage, preventive conservation measures, or objects that are built-in or difficult to transport. However, for highly complex restoration projects that require specialized techniques, materials, or climate-controlled workshops, transport to our central restoration workshop in Berlin is essential to ensure the highest quality restoration work.

Procedure and Costs of On-Site Restoration by the Central Restoration Workshop in Berlin

The best way for us to determine whether our service is suitable for your needs and your specific item is to review the general and detailed photos of your item that you send us. After analyzing the photos and conducting a preliminary on-site inspection, if necessary, we—as a team of restorers with extensive experience in on-site work—will develop a restoration plan that is optimally tailored to your needs and the requirements of the object. We will then schedule a suitable date to carry out the restoration.

As with the work carried out in our central restoration workshop in Berlin, we naturally place special emphasis on treating your piece of furniture or work of art—and its history—with the utmost care and respect. Our goal is always to work precisely and conscientiously in accordance with the principles of the Venice Charter and modern conservation standards in order to preserve and restore your cultural heritage to the best of our ability. The techniques and materials used are carefully selected.

The cost of our on-site restoration service is broken down as follows:

  • A maximum of 120.00–180.00 euros (net) for travel to and from destinations within the Berlin S-Bahn ring.

Frequently Asked Questions About On-Site Restorations

that you may have
Do you carry out furniture restoration or wood restoration on-site?
Generally speaking, yes. The necessary restoration measures depend on the extent of the restoration needs or the damage to the object. Working directly on site is usually even advantageous, as it avoids the need to transport delicate furniture or wooden objects. Most conservation, protective, maintenance, and cleaning tasks, as well as minor repairs, can often be carried out directly at the object’s location. This also includes simple interventions such as securing loose veneers on a dresser, repairing defective locks, and surface restoration. However, for more complex procedures that require specialized laboratory testing or material analysis, transport to our ZRW Berlin facility is essential.
Can I do anything myself to preserve my furniture?
I can only encourage you to do so. Preventive conservation measures are crucial for preservation. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly so that we can work together to find a way for me, as a specialist, to help you preserve your piece of furniture.

How can I maintain my furniture?
Upon request, we’d be happy to visit you and perform maintenance on your furniture, wooden objects, or built-in wood as part of historic preservation efforts. To ensure you can continue to enjoy your favorite pieces for many years to come, we’d like to offer a few tips on proper wood care. Unfortunately, valuable antique furniture is often literally “ruined by improper care.” A trained eye—or even an examination by a restorer—can help you identify the surface type and advise you on appropriate measures for wood protection and preservation. The right techniques are crucial here.

Can I carry out the restoration of my furniture myself?
If you have the necessary expertise and the right tools, then of course. Otherwise, we strongly advise against restoring antique furniture if you lack the appropriate knowledge, because a piece can quickly be “over-restored,” and once that happens, the damage is very difficult to repair. Furniture restoration—especially when it involves the surface or even a full reconstruction—requires expertise. If your piece of furniture or wooden object has significant financial, qualitative, sentimental, or historical value, you should definitely hire a restorer to handle its conservation and/or restoration. Often, it’s about more than just having Grandma’s dresser restored; it’s about preserving a piece of history. Our restoration workshop in Berlin is the right place for this, even though we also offer many restoration services on-site.
