Restorations
Good to know

What is the difference between restorations and "Restaurationen"?

The terms restoration and “Restauration” are often used synonymously in German, but they describe different things: In the restoration process, a piece of furniture is returned to a state that is as close as possible to the original. The goal of restorations is to preserve the object as it was once conceived, taking into account its age and the materials used.

The term “Restauration,” on the other hand, is usually used in a general sense for the re-establishment of a political regime – in an art-historical sense, it refers to a “revival” in which styles of past eras are recreated using contemporary means. A “Restauration” therefore has nothing in common with the work of a restorer.

Restorations
Beginnings

From the beginnings of restorations...

The history of restoration is closely linked to humanity’s desire to preserve cultural values and works of art for future generations. It is assumed that people already preserved and maintained works of art and buildings in antiquity. In the Middle Ages, the focus was primarily on the maintenance of religious buildings and their furnishings.

Restorations as we know them today, however, only developed in the 19th century: at that time, people began to systematically research works of art and buildings and to develop scientific methods to preserve them. A milestone in the history of restoration was the founding of institutions specifically dedicated to restoration that continue to exist today. These include, among others, the Venice Charter.

In the second half of the 20th century, the awareness grew that restorations should be carried out as carefully and reversibly as possible so as not to endanger the historical integrity of the objects. Today, restorations are a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
