Preventive conservation
Definition of a Special Restoration Discipline

What is Preventive Conservation?

In contrast to restoration, which focuses on restoring the original condition of art and cultural assets, preventive conservation aims to initiate preventive measures early on to sustainably avoid damage. It is about preventing interventions. The focus of preventive conservation lies on the environmental conditions of an object – whether antique furniture or designer furniture.

Why Preventive Conservation is Important

Antique furniture and designer furniture react sensitively to changes in their environment. Without preventive measures, damage due to humidity, temperature fluctuations, or pest infestation can quickly occur. There are therefore many good reasons to implement measures for preventive conservation:

step
Protection against Environmental Influences
Fluctuations in temperature, humidity, or light can permanently damage sensitive materials such as wood or textiles. Preventive measures such as controlled room climate or UV filters slow down natural decay. This preserves the original substance and aesthetic quality of your objects in the long term.

step
Prevention of Pests and Microorganisms
Insects, mold, or bacteria can severely damage your furniture or wooden interior fittings. Preventive conservation includes pest monitoring, cleaning, and pollutant-free protective measures. In this way, we detect damage early and can effectively prevent it.
step
Preservation of Value & Protection of Historical Substance
Old furniture or sculptures have not only an ideal but also a material value. Preventive measures keep the original substance intact and preserve the historical character of your object. This ensures the long-term preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
step
Cost-Efficiency through Early Action
Damage to art and cultural assets can later be very complex and expensive to repair. Preventive conservation minimizes the risk of costly restorations. Early protective measures conserve resources and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Preventive Conservation: A Guide to Long-Term Preservation of Your Objects

To prevent interventions on objects, you as a private individual can also implement preventive conservation measures at home. Below, we provide expert tips on how to create the best possible environmental conditions for the long-term preservation of your highly valued object.

step
Climate Stabilization:
Good climatic conditions are a basic prerequisite for protecting your furniture or antiques from damage. A relative humidity of 50 to 60 percent and usual living temperatures are ideal. If there are deviations from these reference values for humidity in your rooms, climate-related damage and damage mechanisms can occur. Typical damages include stress cracks, woodworm or mold infestation, and the detachment of individual elements.
step
Illuminance & Duration:
Wooden furniture should be protected from UV rays as much as possible. Depending on the light incidence through your windows, make sure not to expose your furniture to the sun for too long. Even if modern window glazing usually provides UV protection, infrared heat can still cause dark wooden furniture, in particular, to heat up significantly.
step
Protection from Wind & Weather:
Rainwater and sunlight are the main causes of damage to outdoor furniture. Prevent this by installing a protective canopy against excessive sunlight and precipitation. It is also advisable never to place such an object in direct contact with the ground, as moisture will penetrate the furniture and damage it.
step
Care and Cleaning of Wooden Furniture & Antiques:
For cleaning, it is often sufficient to wipe off dust with a cloth. To remove residues and dirt, a damp (not wet!) cloth is recommended. For the care of wooden furniture, there are specific care measures. If damage is already visible, it may be advisable to have your objects restored, like a wooden floor (on-site). If you are unsure how to properly care for your furniture or antiques, we are happy to assist you!

Our Tip:
Instead of locking your valuable cabinets for security reasons, it is better not to lock them: Wooden cabinets are often violently broken open during a burglary, which can cause enormous damage to the furniture. It is better to store important documents or items in a metal cabinet or safe.
