Historic Preservation

Restoration of wooden interior fixtures in accordance with historic preservation guidelines

All of our furniture and wood restoration projects are carried out in accordance with the central, internationally recognized guideline for the preservation of cultural heritage, the Venice Charter. Our goal is to preserve the original material and the object’s original character through the conservation and restoration of a piece of furniture or a wooden object, thereby preserving a piece of history. To achieve this, our certified conservators preserve the existing condition as much as possible.

As a specialized workshop for wood and furniture restoration, we naturally use only materials that are appropriate for the specific stylistic period of your furniture, furnishings, or interior decor items:

  • Materials,
  • original recipes,
  • historical structures and
  • Original manufacturing methods.

To identify suitable materials and formulations, we conduct wood dating and wood species identification as well as chemical analyses of binders and pigment analyses, we utilize a wide range scientific analytical methods. As an alternative to supplementary reconstruction, our wood and furniture conservators—particularly when dealing with historically protected objects and ensembles—also consider leaving missing fragments as they are in order to perform conservation treatment .

Why should I have my hardwood floor restored?
These are the benefits of restoring a wood floor:

  • Preserving Value: A restored hardwood floor increases the value of your property and preserves its aesthetic character.
  • Sustainability: Restoration allows you to reuse existing materials and conserve the resources that would be needed for a new floor.
  • Aesthetics: Worn, scratched, or dull wooden floors can be restored to their original beauty through sanding, oiling, or varnishing.
  • Functionality: Damage such as cracks, loose planks, or uneven areas is repaired so that the floor is stable and safe again.

What materials are used for furniture restoration and wood restoration?
In wood and furniture restoration, replacement or complementary materials—such as wood, hardware, leather, etc.—are selected to meet aesthetic, historical, and technical quality requirements. If there are no concerns regarding functionality, wood replacements are also made using naturally aged materials with a comparable patina for aesthetic reasons.

If wood needs to be replaced, it comes either from the material collection at my ZRW Berlin or from well-known veneer and lumber dealers in Europe.

How much does it cost to have a hardwood floor restored?
The cost of restoring a wood floor depends on various factors, such as:

  • the area to be restored
  • the condition of the soil
  • the choice between painting, oiling, or waxing

The price may be higher for historic floors or special requests. We’d be happy to provide you with a no-obligation quote tailored to your needs. Contact us today, and we’ll get started right away on restoring your wood floor!
